Chinese evergreen, or Aglaonema commutatum, is a type of evergreen perennial that looks a lot like dieffenbachia, or dumb cane. It usually reaches a height of 20". Thick, elliptic to lance-shaped, dark green leaves with striking silver-gray spots on erect, occasionally branching stems that measure up to 8 inches long and 2-3 inches wide. It is a houseplant that seldom blossoms. Usually appearing in late summer or early autumn, each axillary flower (often found in the arum family) has a little milky white spadix encased in a pale green spathe. The flowers are followed by clusters of red berries.
